It was 2008. I was in an Early Childhood elective class at the Graduate School of Ateneo De Manila University.


My professor, who graduated from the University of the Philippines, showed us pictures of her own preschool located in Quezon City.

Then, after all our ohhs and ahhs, my professor dropped a bomb! Her preschool had just been closed. 


And all the equipment she had just shown us were then for sale.


Our elective class suddenly grew quiet most especially when she said that after more than  fifteen years of robust enrollment, their enrollment declined consistently.  Then their cash flow could no longer sustain the school expenses.


Closed!


Until this day, I remember the pain that has emanated from her faint smile. 


My question to you is this…

I am Teacher Bee, the founder of Alterra Training. I am known in my professional circle as Lorna B. Yan.

How it all began...


It all started with a couple named Jun and Del Jamer. I met them in 2013.  We moved to a new home in Quezon City and the preschool they built is just a few steps away from our townhouse.


In one of our neighborly talks, I discussed at length about an innovation framework and how it can go a long way in differentiating a preschool in a "sea of sameness" of all schools in an area.


Del got hooked!


She came back to me and requested for more ideas.


I admired her passion to learn!


That was the beginning of a new and cherished friendship and of weekend tutorials with her.


In 2016, she got herself and her teachers trained under me on how to use the "Alterra Play-to-Read in 30 Days" program to blend into her innovation model.


The result? A whopping 35% increase of her enrollment, SY 2017-2018.


That inspired me to share with others what I gained from my wealth of experiences and in-depth trainings.

About the Speaker


Lorna B. Yan earned her Master’s Degree at the Ateneo de Manila University. She has twenty-five years of extensive experience as a teacher, a subject leader, and a principal of a preschool and an elementary school. She is also the Executive Director of REDalterra Reading Development Center.

Her development as a school leader is enhanced by expansive trainings and immersion in different areas. Most notable ones include the International Baccalaurette (IB) Program in Singapore in 2014, Advance Placement in Austin, Texas, USA in 2015 and business model innovation in 2017. She, together with her School Team, did benchmarking activities in 2013 with the best local and international schools in the country as well as in Singapore (Hwa Chong, Nanyang Girls High, Singapore Management University, National Technological University, Stamford American School) for curriculum and innovation (2013), in South Korea for Christian Education (2010), in the United States of America (USA) for Advance Placement (2015), in China for robotics (2016), and in Taiwan for student activities (2018).

A testament of her passion for innovation is the reading program she developed, the Alterra Play-to-read in 30 Days, a program that can make at-risk readers read in 30 days or less. The result of her research on this program was presented at the International Conference on Learning and Teaching (ICLT) in South Korea in April 2017 and was published in the International Journal of Learning and Teaching (IJLT) in March 2018. Her South Korea presentation was adjudged as the Best in Oral Presentation.

Due to the intensive preschool competition nowadays, she has been drawn to innovation and marketing. Her current research interests are in the areas of school quality assurance and utilizing market-driving strategies and innovation in growing preschool enrollment.
